Surveys

The HSE’s document entitled the 'Method for the Determination of Hazardous Substances' (MDHS100) gives guidance on best practice for asbestos surveying.

Accolade Asbestos Services works hard to comply with this standard and are experienced in the production of reports that comply with the guidance notes.

There are three types of surveys outlined in MDHS100 as follows:

Type 1: Location and assessment survey (presumptive survey)
The purpose of this survey is to locate, as far as is practicable, the presence and extent of any suspected asbestos containing materials (ACM’s) and can be useful in preparation for more detailed surveys at a later date.

Type 2: Standard sampling, identification and assessment survey (sampling survey)
This type of survey is recommended for those managing properties / buildings as the location and type of asbestos present is identified, thus any maintenance work can be undertaken with a fuller appreciation of potential hazards. This approach also reduces delays as work can commence without interruption.

Type 3: Full access sampling and identification survey (pre-demolition / major refurbishment surveys)
This type of survey involves a much more intrusive approach to the sampling of ACM’s and is normally only used prior to demolition or major refurbishments. Because it involves the opening up of walls, floors and voids it is usually impractical in occupied premises but is very useful as a basis for tendering for the removal of ACM’s prior to major building works.

All of these surveys are presented in a written report which contains details of the location, description and risks presented by presumed or proven ACM’s, and where necessary photographs and drawings.
